E-cigs are an excellent alternative to tobacco cigarettes – tobacco cigarettes contain over 4000 chemical compounds when burned including the 599 additives approved by the US Government for use in the manufacturing process – as smoking cessation aids, as alternatives to tobacco and as an affordable alternative to buying cigarettes.
Whilst ‘vapers’ and medical organisations the world over are plugging e-cigs as healthier, more affordable alternatives to cigarettes, what should owners of bars, cafes and restaurants do about vaping in their establishments – should they turf them out, create vaping zones or let them vape wherever they please?
Vaping etiquette – Should you vape indoors or out?
Vapers are encouraged to practice good vaping etiquette when vaping around others, but what exactly does that entail?
Naturally there are certain areas that vapers should never vape in, but what about bars, cafes and restaurants when there’s no vaping legislation in place to indicate whether vaping in such areas is either legal or against the law?
This is an area as grey as a cloud of tobacco smoke, and for many people, just as worrisome. Whilst the carcinogens and toxicants found in e-cigs are below harmful levels, does that mean vaping indoors is acceptable?
That really depends on where you are and the people present, so unless you’re given the green light to vape by management it’s probably advisable to vape outdoors.
Hospitality establishment owners – How to cater to customers who vape
Provided there aren’t laws in place that prohibit vaping – laws applied to vaping differ the world over – hospitality establishment owners trying to cater for their vaping customer-base have a few options to consider.
A vaping section or vapour-free areas
If there hasn’t been legislature introduced prohibiting the use of e-cigs indoors then this could be – depending on factors like the size of your establishment, its layout and your customer-base– an excellent option to consider and look into further.
A vaping section could be anything from a few chairs and a table in a corner to a dedicated vaping section where vapers can mingle and talk about the e cigarettes available at NYK before returning to sit with their non-vaping companions.
Vapour-free areas could consist of keeping the bar and food service areas free of vapour – consider the impressions of those sitting down to a meal where there’s vapour wafting about – and also consider banning vaping in the toilets and washrooms.
No vaping during food service hours
This was something applied to smoking in many establishments and it makes perfect sense on so many levels.
Many people, smokers/vapers and non-smokers/non-vapers alike, find the thought of sitting down to a meal in a room where smoke or vapour is wafting about immensely unappealing, so banning vaping from the indoor areas of a hospitality establishment during food service hours is consequently well worth considering.
Vapers can simply go outside during food service hours if they want a puff.
Treat vapers like smokers
In many countries smokers can’t take a puff within a designated distance from the door of a hospitality establishment. Treating vapers in the same way could be beneficial – some people mightn’t want to enter an establishment if they have to make their way through clouds of vapour to do so – but it could also alienate vapers and consequently reduce the establishment’s customer base.
Catering to customers who vape is likely to prove difficult for many years to come as lawmakers squabble over how to implement legislature governing vaping in hospitality establishments; however, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t make the effort to cater for your customers who vape whilst assuaging the fears of those who don’t.
