How Employee Safety Measures Can Benefit Your Company

Many small firms consider employee health & safety regulations to be something of a burden, financially speaking, but by taking care of your workers you can reap great rewards in the long run that far outweigh the cost of the safety measures your company implements.

1. Enhancing your reputation in the local community – by taking care of every employee at your company, you will almost certainly enjoy an enhanced reputation among the people that live and work in the area surrounding your premises. Even if local residents are not potential customers, the goodwill that you generate among the community by your actions could be useful in the future should you wish to expand your operations and build new factories and warehouses.

2. Making it easier to attract new talent to your firm – if potential candidates for job vacancies have heard that you place great importance on the safety of your employees they are far more likely to be interested in working for your organisation. People’s primary motivation for landing a new job may be financial but it is always nice to know that the company you are thinking of working for is interested in your wellbeing and does not mind spending money in order to ensure that you are as safe as possible.

3. Making your company more visible to members of the public – whilst the warning signs that you place in strategic locations around your premises are there for the purposes of making sure your workers avoid putting themselves into potentially dangerous situations, highly visible notices are sure to catch the eye of passers-by as well. Although the attention of passing pedestrians and motorists may not lead directly to an increase in turnover, the higher public profile that your company enjoys could indirectly help you to attract new customers.

4. Developing friendly relationships with regulatory authorities – if your organisation is seen to be doing everything possible to comply with the laws that govern employee safety in the workplace, representatives of regularity authorities are more likely to adopt a friendly attitude when conducting inspections and passing on information about new laws. Whilst this will not mean that your company will be able to get away with adopting a slack attitude toward employee safety in the future, and there is no reason why it should wish to, it could make it easier to comply with new regulations, because of the cooperation of local regulatory representatives.

5. Retaining key employees – workers that feel valued are less likely to look for new positions due to dissatisfaction with their current employer. You will still need to offer attractive remuneration packages in order to retain the services of talented employees but if they should happen to be offered more money by close competitors, the fact that you have always looked after their best interests may persuade them not to accept such offers. There are many ways to encourage employee loyalty but in my opinion, looking after their physical wellbeing at all times is one of the most effective and should therefore never be ignored in favour of more fashionable options.

6. Minimising lost productivity due to accidents in the workplace. If you make sure that there are adequate warning signs in any potentially hazardous places and train new members of staff thoroughly before letting them loose in your manufacturing facility, you will minimise the chances of having to shut down an assembly line due to an employee being injured. Not only do such incidents have a direct effect in productivity, due to the fact that any machinery involved must be shut down and inspected for faults before it can be used again, they can also indirectly affect productivity by lowering staff morale.

I hope that I have managed to demonstrate to the unconverted that even small businesses can benefit from investing more money in employee health and safety measures. If you are still unconvinced, take some time to think about how you feel in your personal life when people show that they care for your wellbeing, because you will be able to evoke a similar feeling in your employees by implementing effective safety measures.
